To be on the water, in the presence of these gentle giants, and have the opportunity to photograph them, in their natural habitat, is a magical experience.
Each year, around November to March (conservatively), the humpback whales migrate to the waters around Maui (and the Hawaiian Islands) to mate and raise their young. You can see them frolicking in the water from almost anywhere on the island. Magnificent whales breaching and splashing down into the water, and gracefully diving, their iconic tails emerging. The display is amazing from land, but to get the best photographs, you want to be out on the water, amongst them.
Keeping a safe distance to maintain their protection is a priority, but as you sit on the boat, in the peaceful water, the whales come to you. With my camera ready at all times, I capture the moments that make beautiful photographic wall art. The gorgeous Maui mountains as a backdrop, the nature photographs are stunning, no matter the time of day. Sunset casts a golden glow, while the bright sunlight reflects highlights as the whale’s come above the water.
On one special trip, a newborn calf and its mother spent some time by the boat, the baby only a few days old, learning to roll over, exposing its light gray belly, and swimming alongside its mother with its floppy dorsal fin.
I am always excited to spend time on the water, observing and capturing photographs of these amazing creatures. Each experience is unique and you never know what you might see. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend a boat charter or whale watch tour while you are in Maui and a visit to the Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and the Maui Ocean Center to learn more about these wonderful mammals.
